Abstract
Phan Liêu, Đặng Dung and Nguyễn Trãi were three strong-willed and patriotic scholars, born and raised during the end of the Trần Dynasty. All three were children of high-rank officials, who worked for the Trần Dynasty and later also cooperated with the Hồ Dynasty. They represent the youth generation of the early 15th century, who inherited a great legacy from the Trần Dynasty. They lived in a spirit and glory of national heroes such as Trần Quang Khải, Trần Quốc Toản, etc.
But they had to witness the decline of a great dynasty - the Trần being replaced by the Hồ; and later, the invasion of Chinese.
Like the youth today, Phan Liêu, Đặng Dung and Nguyễn Trãi worried about the future of the nation and its people. All three grew up in the same time period. Nguyễn Trãi and Đặng Dung searched for means to free their people from the domination of the Chinese, while Phan Liêu surrendered and cooperated with the puppet government installed by the invaders. Nguyễn Trãi succeeded in helping Lê Lợi to liberate the country from the Chinese, but Đặng Dung failed and committed suicide. Phan Liêu, due to the influence from Nguyễn Trãi, returned to the liberation army of Lam Sơn and became an important factor in liberating the Nghệ An citadel. And from Nghệ An - used as a springboard for attack, the liberation army of Lam Sơn attacked and reclaim the capital - Đông Đô - then liberated the country.
The success of Nguyễn Trãi, the failure of Đặng Dung, and the pendulus indecisiveness of Phan Liêu, are all valuable lessons in history for us. Delving into the psyche of Nguyễn Trãi, Đặng Dung, and Phan Liêu 500 years ago can be the historical key which enables our generation to understand the actions of scholars in the face of crisis and assists us in finding our own paths today.
